According to the scholar [[Richard Foltz]], the ritual of swords planted in piles of stones or brushwood has [[Scythians|Scythian]] origins, and honoured the martial deity, and even the [[Great Britain|British]] [[Arthurian legend]] of the sword in the stone is an echo of this cult, which was brought to Britain by [[Alans|Alan]] (i.e. "[[Aryan]]" through a consonant shift;
