The women also acted as guides for him. [[Tex Watson|Charles Watson]], a small-town Texan who had quit college and moved to California, soon joined the group at the ranch and Spahn gave him the nickname "Tex", due to [[Texan English|his accent]].<ref name="watson12"/>
