In 1999, [[United States Customs Service|U. S. Customs]] agents seized over {{convert|30|usgal|L|abbr=off|sp=us}} of ayahuasca, which had been shipped to the [[Santa Fe, New Mexico]] branch of UDV. While no charges were filed, the UDV filed suit in 2000, claiming that the seizure was an illegal violation of the church members' rights<ref>{{cite magazine|last1=Toobin|first1=Jeffrey|authorlink1=Jeffrey Toobin|title=High Tea|url=https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2004/12/20/high-tea|accessdate=16 October 2017|magazine=[[The New Yorker]]|date=13 December 2004}}</ref> and seeking a [[preliminary injunction]] preventing the US federal government from barring the group's use of ayahuasca.
